Baloji is a Congolese Belgium-based poet and beatmaker who is releasing a new EP, 64 Bits & Malachite, scheduled for arrival on 30th October.
“64 bits” refers to in-built processors and how, no matter how powerful they are at the time, they are destined for obsolescence. “Malachite” is referenced for its sentimental, rather than monetary value, in a country where precious stones are a global commodity.
He’s shared a video for a track taken from the forthcoming EP, ‘Unité & Litre’, which stars dancer Jolie Ngemi, as she searches the city of Kinshasa, the DRC capital, for inspiration. Her magnetic dancing partners with the tumbling beats and polyrhythms of Baloji’s sound. “Everything I do in music is computer-based – and 40% of my computer and my phone came from Congolese soil,” he says.
